As humans, we yearn to connect with one another about topics that matter, that make us think, that incite change. Even as 2020 made it difficult share ideas in person, we found ways to go #AgainstTheGrain and persevere. These talks were born out of that shared vision.
Racism from the perspective of a non-threatening black man
Doyin Richards / Diversity Author / Anti-Racism Facilitator Even though Doyin Richards grew up as a self-described "preppy, non-threatening Black kid", it didn't prevent him from being called the N-word by a white person for the first time as a 9-year-old. His talk explains how racism brings about expectations and fear for Black men of all kinds, how it almost made Doyin take his own life, and what actions white people can take right now to be anti-racist. Doyin Richards is a diversity author and anti-racism facilitator, but he also grew up as a self-described "preppy Black kid" in a predominately white town. His numerous experiences with racism will surprise you. |
Which new normal will you choose?
Veronica Kirin / Anthropologist / Author / Entrepreneur COVID has changed everything; It has changed our way of life, the way we look at the world, and how we connect with others. It has also taught us a lot about isolation and community. Why would we want to retain these changes after the pandemic is over? Veronica Kirin is an award winning anthropologist, entrepreneur, and author who uses ethnography (storytelling) to document paradigm shifts as they happen for the sake of future generations. Her talks share important lessons that are ubiquitous to humanity and provide a road map for navigating changing tides. |
How to talk about contentious issues of science
Heather Conklin / Political Scientist / Science Communicator Climate change. Masks during COVID. Vaccines. How do we talk about issues of science with people who don't share our views? Social scientist and science communicator, Heather Conklin, explores how an unlikely hero can help us think critically and reduce polarization on contentious issues of science. She calls this hero The Skeptic: a person who finds room for doubt, yet continues to search for answers, so that we can embrace the space in the middle. In her work as a social scientist, science communicator, and social entrepreneur, Heather Conklin explores the intersection of science, politics, and society to build a more informed and engaged world. |
Addressing mass shootings through the built environment
Daveed Gartenstein-Ross / National Security Expert Whether carried out by ideological zealots or nihilistic loners, mass shootings tend to end quickly, making a fast reaction vital. Crisis architecture incorporates tactical, psychological, and technological measures to protect potential victims, to increase survivability when attacks occur. Importantly, crisis architecture is also designed to preserve a building’s function and aesthetics, in contrast to the jarring look that we associate with securitized architecture. Daveed is a scholar, practitioner, author, and entrepreneur whose career has focused on critical twenty-first century challenges, particularly in the national security space. He began to develop the concept of "crisis architecture" five years ago when he was struck by the similarities between the terrorist attacks that he had studied closely and the mass shootings that were becoming a more prominent, and tragic, part of the national landscape. |
