Where do gifts come from?
Pablo Thomas Mora / Professional Kid An obnoxiously-humble, gifted child tells you why being 'gifted' is a gift. And how that gift can be received by anyone at any time ...even you. Pablo Thomas Mora is a fastidious humble individual who will therefore abstain from listing his many and varied accomplishments. He dreams of falling until he wakes up. Occasionally he acts sporadically. |

Leonard Szymczak Educator / Psychotherapist / Writer Passionate about breaking the cycle of absent fathers in his family, Leonard became a stay-at-home dad when his children were young. That experience not only altered his life but the lives of his children. He shares his journey where he had to WAKE UP from the pain of being a fatherless son, GROW UP to be the dad he always wanted, and SHOW UP with a superpower—the power of fathering. Leonard Szymczak has been in the forefront of men’s health in Australia and America for 35 years. An educator, psychotherapist, and award-winning author of four books, he directed a Family Therapy Training Program in Sydney and later worked with the Family Institute at Northwestern University. |

The hot lava game: we need to own our kids' mental health

Black holes and bananas: how science helps us see the unseen
Mary St. John-Putnam / Author / Instructor A lighthearted look at gravity, inspired by the black hole image released in early 2019. Mary mentions some of those responsible—both seen and unseen—for the theories that led to the historic, award-winning image. She adds some fun to the FUNdamentals of seeing the unseen, while "unpeeling" the secrets of how we can all be inspired and innovative like the scientists who reveal the mysteries of the unseen. Mary was born and raised in Hawaii on sunshine and corny jokes. She earned degrees in computer science and physics. As a geek, her software has helped a variety of applications come to life, from correlating NASA radio astronomy data on black holes and quasars, to sending James Cameron to the bottom of the ocean (and bringing him back). Two decades into her career, she switched from working on engineering teams to marketing and communication teams. She enjoys translating complicated technical and scientific concepts into plain English, so that others may enjoy these discoveries as much as she does. |
The profound power of deep science on young people
Don Miller / CEO of Crosswired Science / Director of Wonders Science Can science for kids spark a profound sense of delight? Don Miller makes an appealing (and highly entertaining) case that challenges assumptions about how children absorb and retain science concepts. He delights the audience with the wonders of science, all to prove how science education ought to be taught. Science that goes deep and delights builds in kids "science minds" that track with the greatest science innovators and discoverers on the planet. Don has spent much of his life teaching the wonders of the world around us to kids of all ages. He has been astonished at the help, delight and life-changing experiences that have come to young people of many ages, backgrounds and nationalities. In the process of being in the trenches with kids, he has learned that certain approaches to teaching science can have profound effects on the lives of young people AND on their ability to learn. |
The emotional costs of euthanasia
Sarah Hoggan / DVM Euthanasia is a decision that will echo in your mind long after the event. This talk explains that echo and why it occurs. Sarah has worked as an emergency doctor throughout her veterinary career. She feels her most important task as an emergency doctor is translating the medical diagnosis and clinical situation into a more understandable context for the family so they can make decisions feeling empowered instead of overwhelmed. |

Naruwan Taiko / Drumming Group Naruwan Taiko opens the 8th annual TEDxTemecula conference "ElevaTEDxperience." Wanting to spread the wide array of physical, mental, and social benefits of taiko to her local community, Diana Wu founded Naruwan Taiko and in early 2008, with the help of her collegiate taiko friends, she held a community workshop for San Diego with some taped tires and a once forgotten old lion dance drum with a growing hole in the center. Since that day, Naruwan has grown to over thirty performance members, met numerous community class attendees over the years, and thankfully, has been blessed with drums that don’t have holes in the center. The word “Naruwan” is a Taiwanese Ami greeting, meaning “welcome, for we are all in the same family” and conveys the group’s belief that even though taiko is traditionally Japanese, it is an art form that has the ability to bring a diverse community together. Thus, the name embodies the group’s mission to provide everyone the opportunity to discover taiko and make joyous sound with each other, regardless of background, age, and experience. |
